When testing your home for radon please read and follow all test kit instructions. The following radon testing protocols must also be followed for accurate radon measurement.

1. Test the lowest livable and frequently occupied area in your home.

2. Keep windows and doors closed 12 hours prior to starting your test and during the entire exposure period.

3. Place the test device where it will not be disturbed and in the normal breathing zone (two to six feet from the floor).

4. Do not place the test kit in a draft or near exterior windows and doors.

5. Avoid testing near heat sources and areas with high humidity like bathrooms and kitchens.

6. Return your test sample to the lab immediately after completing the test exposure.


Important - Failure to follow test kit instructions will invalidate your test.

*The EPA recommends radon testing every two years or anytime major renovations are made to your home or ventilation system. **Radon testing for real estate transactions requires two passive test devices or one active continuous radon monitor. Testing can be done simultaneously or sequentially using the average of the measurements to make a mitigation decision.

Radon Risk Information - Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking. The US EPA, the Surgeon General and the Minnesota Department of Health strongly recommend taking further action when a homes radon test results are 4.0 pCi/l or greater. The concentration of radon in the home is measured in pico curies per liter of air (pCi/l). Radon levels less than 4.0 pCi/l still pose some risk and in many cases may be reduced. If the radon level in the home is between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/l, the EPA still recommends that you consider fixing your home.
